Part-time jobs: whether you dreamt of the pay, thought you could take the challenge, or if you’ve simply needed to escape the boredom, you may have thought about applying for one. Here are the benefits of getting a part-time job in high school and exactly what to expect.
There’s more than just the payday; working can give many invaluable skills and experience. In part-time, no matter where you work and what you do, you will have to speak and cooperate with new people; it’s inevitable. Although uncomfortable and intimidating at first, doing so can build your social skills and will make you more favorable to colleges and future employers. A job will force you to build resilience and hone your problem-solving skills; skills that can be useful in school too. However, earning that sweet, sweet cash makes it all worth it, letting you spend hard-earned money on interests and accessories you don’t want to bother your parents to get.
However, obtaining a part-time job is no easy feat and there are several factors to consider. For such social and active workplaces, one could come home exhausted both physically and mentally. For less flexible work-hours, one may have rather undesirable study times and may struggle with social time with friends. It all depends on if you believe you are capable of juggling work and school work, your ability to plan ahead, and if it fits into your busy schedules. “I personally am able to find time during my school day or at work to finish homework, but for some people who struggle with time-management or have longer hours, I could see how having a job could cause you to fall behind.” states student Ashton Cherry.
If you do plan on getting a part-time job, there’s much to prepare for, but it’s not as terrifying as you think. Starting with the application process, it’s important to create a strong and detailed resume of your capabilities, using graphic design tools such as Canva, Google Suite, or Adobe; they have many pre-made templates to use. When you’re brought in for your interview, take deep breaths and be prepared to answer questions regarding your greatest strengths, your career goals, and what days and time you’d be available to work.
Joining the work-force may prove a hefty challenge. Despite the many challenges both in and out of the workplace you may face, the experience and skills you’ll learn to overcome your difficulties will prepare you and build your bright future.
