The Class of 2029 officially became Dons on August 7 at Cerritos High School’s annual Freshman Orientation, an event filled with cheers, music, and information from Link Crew leaders, counselors, and administrators.
Held in the East Gym, the orientation was led by the Link Crew and the CHS leadership team, with advisor Mrs. Holly Matchett leading them. Freshmen were greeted with enthusiastic chants and high-fives before participating in games, campus tours, and meet-and-greets designed to make the first day of school a little less anxiety filled.
“9th grade orientation is important to attend so that you can make connections with others prior to stepping foot onto campus on the first day of school,” said Mrs. Matchett. “It’s also an opportunity for the ninth graders to meet some upperclassmen and ask them questions about their experience at CHS.”
The day’s activities helped students catch up with friends, learn the campus layout, and ease worries about finding classes and getting to them on time on August 13, 2025. Freshman Aiden Lopez shared, “I felt pretty good about today because I was able to see my friends again on the first day. Plus, the school seems pretty cool. So yeah, I’m happy.”
Link Crew Leader and senior Morgan Stecher said she wanted to make the day as welcoming as possible. “I hope to help the freshmen feel more comfortable in such a new place.”
Planning for orientation started last school year, when Link Crew leaders met to shape the vision for the event. On August 6, the entire Link Crew gathered for a run-through, practicing tours, setting up tables and signs, and setting the Cerritos Way Gate.
Administrators and support staff also played a key role. Counselors and deans, including Mr. Lavernis Martin and Mr. Jose Zaragoza, introduced themselves to the new students. “Freshman Orientation is such a special day!” Mr. Martin said. “It’s the start to your high school journey and a great way to make friends, learn about the school and most importantly it’s the first day you officially become a DON!”
Students also met Mental Health Professionals Ms. Anna Garcia and Ms. Lisset Magdaleno, who reminded them that help is always available. They announced a new student center opening in the 200 building this fall, designed to give students a space to relax, connect, and access resources.
By the end of the day, freshmen left with new friends by their side, and their first taste of CHS school spirit to help kick off their first year of high school.
