As 2025 progresses, California schools are facing significant hardships. They were due $811 million in funds intended to support programs and teachers, but the money was withheld in response to recent orders.
Students and teachers can expect to see changes in their school environments. The withheld funds were originally meant for student enrichment and teacher professional development, which affects how teachers are trained. Additionally, $152.6 million of the withheld money was supposed to fund 21st Century Community Learning Centers. These centers help students from low-performing schools receive education outside of school hours. As a result, learning environments may worsen due to less experienced teachers, and students may face a more difficult classroom experience overall.
Students and teachers will also see impacts on their livelihoods. About $121 million was originally designated for migrant education, and roughly $157.6 million was earmarked for English language acquisition. Both budget cuts will affect non-native English speakers, making it harder for them to perform everyday tasks such as communicating effectively or securing employment.
As 2025 comes to a close, these budget cuts are expected to hit California schools hard. Jobs, programs, and even students’ lives will be affected. With these changes comes the risk of a weaker education system and greater challenges for students.
