Employment and Networking Classes Should Be Taught at Cerritos HS
Cerritos High School offers many electives and extracurricular activities, but none of which will help struggling teenagers and young adults kickstart their life of work. Getting any job – especially your first – is difficult but with the proper knowledge, you can optimize your resume to match common eye-scan reading patterns of managers to impress. “So telling a young person, ‘Just get a job‘ is not tough love. It’s like going to the Sahara, looking up and yelling ‘Just rain!’ which is weird. Stop it,” writes Erica Buist in the the Guardian. The best way to assist is to teach the importance of social and professional networking. Networking is the process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts. This also serves in creating long-term relationships with mutual benefits.
Most people after graduating step into a job search with a vague sense of direction. They must learn to answer their questions through self-study with trial and error. To ensure confidence in their job hunt, carrier building and connection skills should be instructed at a high school level. If it does not entirely deserve a full class, it should be included as a semester in the Futures class that is already offered. Futures focuses on how social media is driving the new economy. Moreover, Networking is most utilized through the direct communication of social media, making it a perfect fit for the class.
Career advice guru Micheal Page writes that “being visible and getting noticed is a benefit of networking that’s essential in career building. Regularly attending professional and social events will help make your face known.’” So by talking to others in and outside of your field, you can get insight that only comes from viewing a situation with fresh eyes. Strong connections open doors in the form of career advice and opportunities, as well as increase the confidence needed to engage in conversations with unfamiliar faces. You never know when someone is hiring for positions you might want.
Although this can improve your career, don’t be all about business. The first thing you need to do is figure out who you want to be in your network. It should not just be the people who eat lunch at the same time and area as you. Ask yourself, Who can help me? It starts like any relationship, fostering meaningful conversations. Check in occasionally to keep in contact. This will ensure they keep you in memory and want the best interest for you. It is not an easy task, but this critical skill could help students acquire crucial information about jobs, increase their social capability, and succeed early.
