On February 14th, 2023, alternative legend, Lana Del Rey, released the single A&W. A&W has a dual meaning:. One is the tasty American drink, A&W Root Beer, and the two words “American Wh*re.” This single marks her second anticipated single, which placed its spot on her ninth studio album.

Part One: A&W

A&W starts off with a guitar rhythm from out of this world. At the start, A&W talks about her transition from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. During the chorus she repeats, “This is an experience of an American Wh*re” and she says this because, in the pre-chorus of the first half she displays the effect of being an ‘American Wh*re’ , “I say I live in Rosemead, really, I’m at the Ramada.” She also says “It doesn’t really matter, doesn’t really, really matter” because nobody cares that she’s like this. Also she describes how she feels like a ghost and feels invisible because everyone sees her as a s*x object. Before Part One ends, her last lyrics from the guitar ballad are, “It’s not about having’ someone to love me anymore. No, this is the experience of being an American wh*re.”

Part Two: Jimmy

At the start of Part Two, she presents her love for rap with a rap type-beat. During the build-up of this part you can hear distorted-angelic-like sounds like ‘ohs’. In the chorus she repeats the lines, “Jimmy Jimmy Ko Ko bop Jimmy Jimmy Ride.”  Jimmy Ko Ko Bop is an American term originally from the song “Shimmy Shimmy Koko Bop” from Little Anthony and The Imperials. Jimmy Jimmy is her take on this original lyric since she always makes the best from old american songs. After this, a violin sound plays, she sampled her own song “NFR”s intro. She finished the song strong with the line “Your mom called and told her your f—–g up big time” with an echo to show that she can really get in your head.

Lana Del Rey is not just a singer or songwriter, she’s a poet. She brought an entire new meaning to the words “American Wh*re.” Lana Del Rey’s upcoming album, “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd,” comes out on March 10, 2023. Mark your calendars to see Lana make her way back into music.
