At the beginning of the school year we welcomed Mr. Derek Jeans to our social science department. Although he is a new teacher at Cerritos High School,  Jeans has been teaching at ABC Unified School District for over a decade. Before coming to CHS, he taught at both Whitney and Gahr. Jeans grew up in the state of Missouri where he found his passion and current career-history. He mentioned, “I had multiple teachers that really just kind of ignited a spark in me, that made me ask questions about, ‘why are we here’ and ‘why does this matter’ and ‘how did we get to this crazy place,”

When shrinking enrollment came around, he offered to join Cerritos since he was familiar with teachers, such as Ms. Nicholson, at our school. Over the years, Jeans has tested and refined his teaching style to make his lessons both engaging and informative for his students. “I try to give them the ‘why,’ I try to encourage them to look at things from a different perspective,” said  Jeans.

We are privileged to have Mr. Jeans for his 30th year of teaching and look forward to many more years with him at Cerritos High School.
