Dons flocked to the quad to view the cultural organizations they could join for the second day of club week. The clubs: Chikara(Japanese), Jakara Movement, Taiwanese, Magkaisa(Phillipino), South East Asian Student Association(SEASA), Black Student Union(BSU), and Korean Culture Club(KCC) had tables filled with activities, as well as members walking around with signs encouraging students to join their clubs.
Groups like the BSU had signs decorated with flags from different African countries, and played music while giving out balloons. Vice President Hillena Mahari explained “Other people should be able to learn about their cultures even if they couldn’t before.” SEASA members were dressed in costumes holding signs with member information, and when interviewed, club president Rachel Han Ho commented, “ We have a lot of events planned, and meetings each month to celebrate each individual South East Asian Country. We just want to teach people about our history as a whole.”
The Jakara Movement, also known as the Sikh Honors and Service Society, dre attention with balloons and included a poster filled with club information and were handing out stickers with their logo. Leader Navii Padda revealed that she established a chapter for Cerritos High School and said, “I want to offer help to seniors because our club has programs that can help them with College applications and recommendations”
Clubs such as the Taiwanese and Magkaisa showed off past events with posters and plans to host fundraisers in the future. Chikara club included a handmade Torii in front of their booth, with leader Elise Osaki commenting, “The club will be focusing on community service because it has such a big role in Japanese society.” The KCC had members proudly walk around with a themed American flag of k-pop star Kim Chaewon and a poster introducing their club’s cabinet members. These clubs work closely with the language elective classes, though it is not a requirement to join the clubs.
Tomorrow come out to the quad during lunch to join clubs that feature everything from a love for photography to a love of gardening. Special interest take center quad tomorrow.
