Dons came to interact with the community service clubs set up in the quad earlier today. Organizations, such as; American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Key Club, Surf Rider, and Octagon created photo opportunities and posters to engage students’ interest.
The American Red Cross and American Cancer Society had tables with club information and sported signs encouraging students to join, focusing on the medical aspects of community service. When asked what this year is all about, Senior David Park the American Red Cross leader, shared, “Teaching others what exactly emergency response is, but bonding together as members.” While the American Cancer Society plans to continue creating and donating chemotherapy kits, along with having cancer patients and survivors coming to share their experiences.
Key Club had members running around the quad in monkey costumes and offered students the opportunity to pose with signs. While having to pay a donation of $18 dollars to join, Senior and President Janelle Vargas is sure that new members will be able to participate in a variety of activities, and with a goal of 5000 service hours with 1000 already completed, she is confident that they’ll have a successful year to share with new members. Octagon had their booth include all club information with their socials and signs with their eight tentacled mascot, inviting students to join. One of the Presidents in her last year, Mehr Ghai explained, “What sets us apart from other clubs is our tight-knit community and we provide a lot of scholarship opportunities.”
The beach centric environmental club, Surf Riders, made a splash with members parading signs, one dressed in a shark costume. When interviewed, Club President and Senior Gabriella Colombo expressed her excitement for the upcoming year, “ We are going to be partnering up with the Aquarium Of the Pacific, and bigger organizations to give our members more opportunities to network with others.” Their main highlight is being able to achieve volunteering hours by going to the beach, and while learning on how to change the environment for the better.
Club Week concludes tomorrow, giving the Dons who want to enrich and sharpen their academic skills a chance to join the right club for them.
