Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? It’s the Wendy’s fast food chain? Well, yes, because Spongebob Squarepants is partnering with Wendy’s in the Krabby Patty Kollab meal running from October 8 to November 11 in celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary. The meal features the famous Krabby Patty Kollab Burger, sauced with the coveted secret formula, and the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty, both being brought to shore for the first time ever.
No matter how you slice it, dice it, and serve it, there is no doubt the Krabby Patty Kollab has been successful. Influencers and fans of the Spongebob Squarepants show have flocked to Wendy’s establishments in hopes of trying the burger; one they could’ve only tasted in their childhood imaginations. At certain locations, Wendy’s has set up a decorated Spongebob themed drive-thru, which always has an at least 30 minute line to enter. Wendy’s has also seen an around 25% increase in sales numbers following the release of the collaboration.
As excited as the childhood Zion is for this “Kollab,” the real question is: how tasty is the real life Krabby Patty meal in comparison to what the show suggests? Well, as shocking as an electric eel, the Krabby Patty Kollab meal has garnered mixed reviews, with many critics online having called the whole promotion a cash grab. Some say the Krabby Patty Kollab burger itself is just a good old Wendy’s burger, while others say the sauce brings the flavor and ‘zing’ a Wendy’s burger needs.
In my opinion, the Krabby Patty Kollab meal isn’t up to Krusty Krab standards. Although the tangy secret formula sauce compliments the other flavors well and the ingredients remain fresh as always, it was simply not enough to differentiate the Krabby Patty from the everyday deluxe cheeseburger. On the other hand, the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty was excellent, as the vanilla, pineapple, and mango created a delightful tropical taste and could easily become a mainstay on the Wendy’s menu. The meal overall sadly does not match my childhood expectations and it’s definitely not something to swim after. However, if you’re a Spongebob fan who wishes to appreciate the franchise or if you’re nearby and looking for a quality fast-food bite, I’d recommend the Krabby Patty Kollab meal to you.
