Students, teachers, and parents alike admired and appreciated the vast creativity and imaginations of our Dons at the CHEF & VAPA Showcase & Reception. On Mar. 13 from 6PM to 8PM, our students were given the opportunity to have their art displayed at the Library Media Center as they also anticipated the exciting announcement of the winners of the CHEF Art Contest.
As the event began, people crowded and admired the pieces presented during the Gallery Viewing period. The gallery had an array of mediums including: Film & Video Production, AP Art, 2D Art, 3D Art, LIFE Art, Performing Arts, Digital Arts and Photography, Journalism, and Ceramics created throughout the school year. Beautiful artworks, photos, sculptures, and more were laid out throughout the tables, and sounds of amazement and praise filled the room. “It’s incredible to see the dedication and imagination of other students in one place,” says Junior Skye Malabicky.
As more and more people gathered, CHEF President Mrs. Sonia De Mesa and Principal Dr. Wise introduced and celebrated our wonderful VAPA teachers and students. Teachers Mrs. Quiggle and Mr. Yamamoto showcased their various art and ceramics classes, but many pieces were made by students in their own time. The dedication that these students have to their craft had the chance to be laid out for all to see. “We’re all creative in some way, whether it’s in dancing, drawing, and even within our relationships” says Mrs. Quiggle, “our VAPA classes can help students discover their talents and themselves too.” Another mural was also announced to be painted, planned to be created later in 2025.
At 7:30PM, Rev. Pamela Davis commenced the Arts Awards Presentation, and the audience eagerly waited for the winners to be announced. Students were called up to have their pieces featured on the screen, taking a moment to appreciate the work they put into their work. Smiles shone on their faces as they beamed with excitement as they were recognized for their meaningful messages and skillful pieces.
Overall, the CHEF & VAPA Showcase and Reception of 2025 was a great success, and it gave everyone a chance to appreciate the talents of Cerritos High School’s students. As the second annual VAPA Week came to a close, they announced that they hope to continue this event, leading on to next year, and hopefully many more to come.
