Cerritos Cross Country Team held their annual Cow Run at John Glenn High School. Athletes, along with friends, and families attended this event Sept. 2, 2023.
Eighteen schools – split up into Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh teams – lined up on the football field of John Glenn High School. Athletes completed drills for a few minutes before getting to their places to wait for the starter pistol. The Great Cow Run course consists of two full laps around the track before athletes broke away to run through the school ground. With different strategies in mind, some runners went for a strong and steady pace, while others gradually increased their speed.
On the sidelines, friends, families, and teammates, some dressed in cow costumes, offered their support by cheering on the athletes as they passed which gave them the motivation to finish. According to one of the team captains, Robin Chong, some show support “just throwing a thumbs up while we’re running past each other.”
The first 70 runners receive a medal. Additionally, the first two runners to come through would receive a beret along with the medal.
Hosting this event was the cross country coach Jason Watanabe who emphasized that “building that confidence and support with one another,” is what creates a unified team. Which events like this do.
