The future of our graduating seniors draws closer and closer, and so does their need to feel prepared for their future plans. Career prospects, financial plans, and a fast and changing world are draining the energy of many of our graduating Cerritos High Dons. After all, this is their future they’re thinking about, and will determine what the rest of their upcoming years will look like. Whether it’s parents, grandparents, or other relatives, they just can’t seem to escape the onslaught of questions about what they’re going to pursue in and after college. They have to figure it out no matter what, right? I’m here to say that the future, although important to think about, is something that doesn’t need to be figured out by graduation.
High school is seen by many as a means to explore your interests and find something that you want to pursue in college. However, high school only offers so many extra programs and classes that cater to different interests. Therefore, not everybody is going to be able to find something that they like doing. Everyone is different, and there is a very possible chance that school doesn’t offer the opportunity for students to delve into a specific subject that may or may not intrigue them. This puts unnecessary stress on graduating seniors, as they are not able to control whether their specific interest exists at school or not.
The real time when interests should be discovered is in college, where there are far more options for specific subjects available academically and in clubs and programs. It is simply a fact that colleges offer more courses and academic pathways than high school, as the courses there are much more specific and applicable to a certain part of a field or industry. The same could be said for clubs, which are higher in quantity compared to high school and revolve around a more diverse set of subjects, ranging from culture to hobbies.
The most important thing in your search for your passion is to simply be open to learning more about yourself and the world around you. Get outside, meet new people, and be willing to connect with them so that you have more opportunities to experience new things that you may dislike or enjoy. Even if you may not look forward to everything that comes your way, you will understand and discover more of yourself in the process, and you might learn things about yourself that you never knew. Regardless, never stop learning and always be adventurous in finding that interest or passion that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
