School districts in California will be restructuring middle schools to include sixth grade starting in the school year of 2027-2028. Decided on Sept. 16, 2026 by the Board of Education, the change aims to help students prepare for the expectations of middle school education earlier. Middle school teachers will have new sets of expectations for sixth grade students, with many also having to take on new classes.
Another reason for this change is to give middle schools more resources to their upperclassmen, as they will now be paid more for having more students. Sixth graders will now also have access to electives, technology classes, and electives. They believe that combining the three grades together will help smoothen the transition into both middle school and high school.
A major part of why this transition is happening is because elementary schools in California are closing due to lower enrollment and budget issues. With California rapidly declining in population and residents having less children, schools are preparing for the drop in students. In the ABC Unified District, Aloha, Juarez, Furgenson, and Stowers Elementary have all scheduled to close for the 2027-2028 school year. Many other districts are also closing elementary schools, too.
This transition is to help prevent districts from going out of business. Although students are going to lose a year in elementary school, it will allow them to begin this new chapter earlier in life.
