2025 has become one of modern music’s most record breaking years. Some of the biggest artists of the era released albums and songs that have broken significant records, cementing new titans of the industry. With streaming at an all-time high, artists across every genre are releasing projects that are shaping today’s culture.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), mid-year revenue hit a record $5.6 billion, driven mostly by streaming subscriptions. The United States continues to be the center of global music listening, with more listeners than the next six largest countries combined, according to Luminate Data.
One of the most surprising hits of the year came from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters. Its single “Golden” shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and hit more than 3 billion global streams in just a few months. On the opposite end of the music spectrum, Playboi Carti’s I AM MUSIC became the biggest rap debut of 2025, moving 300,000 first-week units, even though his entire rollout was Instagram selfies in backward NBA jerseys.
Kendrick Lamar and SZA shaped some of the year’s biggest cultural moments. Their Super Bowl halftime show marked the first time a rapper headlined the event, and it became the most-watched halftime performance ever, with 133.4 million live viewers. Their song “Luther,” from Kendrick’s 2024 album GNX, held No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 consecutive weeks. Both the song and the album picked up major nominations for the 68th Annual Grammys, including Album, Song, and Record of the Year. Their “Grand National Tour” was also a massive success, grossing more than $556 million across Europe and North America.
The Weeknd, currently the most-streamed artist on Spotify with 123 million monthly listeners, had another huge year. His album Hurry Up Tomorrow sold 490,000 units and earned 171.5 million first-week streams, putting 14 songs on the Hot 100 at once. His “After Hours Til Dawn Tour” brought in $600 million, making it the biggest R&B tour ever.
Latin music continued to rise, earning $490.3 million in U.S. revenue at a nearly 6% increase from last year. Bad Bunny remains the most-streamed Latin artist in the world and a big reason for the resurgence of latin music. His album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS sold 203,500 units, making it the top-selling Latin album of 2025. He earned several Grammy nominations and was announced as the headliner for the 2026 Super Bowl.
Taylor Swift solidified herself to being one of the most consistent record-breaking artists of all time. The Life of a Showgirl earned more than 4 million first-week sales and $135 million in revenue–the biggest debut in music history. All tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album broke Spotify’s record for most streams in a single day.
These artists are continuing to redefine what success in the music industry looks like, setting a new standard. We can only watch to see how other artists can keep up; with many projects expected to release in 2026, the year is already looking promising.
