Hosted in a collaboration between ASB and Black Student Union (BSU), Dons gathered in the West Gym in celebration of Black History Month. On Friday at 10:24a.m., they sought to inform students about African American culture through presentations to the crowd and participatory activities.
The rally began with members from ASB and BSU thanking the crowd for coming and speaking about the meaning of Black History Month. A video was projected to the audience, discussing the culture’s beauty and uniqueness. The rally’s decoration was reminiscent of the American 90’s aesthetic, bringing a certain charm to the stage.
Afterwards, the organizers commenced a chant competition between grade levels, featuring the iconic Spirit Clap and set up games of Musical Chairs. Dancers from the Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity informed and entertained the spectators with rhythmic dances and songs rooted in African American history. The rally ended at 10:54a.m., where hosts also thanked visitors from Ross Middle School.
”My favorite part of the whole rally would have to be Kappa’s Alpha PSI’s dance routines,” said junior Janold Blanshard, ”it was really unique compared to other rallies I’ve been to and super cool to watch.”
At the end of the rally, organizers told participants to be mindful of black history year-round instead of just in the month of February; as the purpose of the rally was to bring the people of Cerritos High School together. ASB and Black Student Union were able to successfully inform people of black history and, in doing so, brought the student body closer together.
