Passengers of the MV Hondius cruise ship have been evacuated after being overrun by the contagious Hantavirus. On May 11, United States military and government planes dispelled personnel in full-body protective gear and masks, who took the 120 cruisers back to their home countries. However, seven infected passengers are still quarantined, with one American suspected to have the virus.
The first on board cases of Hantavirus were reported on May 2 after eight passengers declared severe respiratory illness. Three passengers have died since then, prompting action from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Johannesburg who worked towards containment. With passengers originating from 20 different countries, panic has sparked online about the further spread of Hantavirus and whether they should start preparing masks and toilet paper.
After the terror of COVID-19, this begs the question: is the Hantavirus the next global pandemic? Fortunately, sources say absolutely not.
The Hantavirus are a family of deadly viruses spreading through rodents and bodily fluids of the infected. Those with the virus start off with fever-like symptoms, but experience coughing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest as lungs fill with fluid. However, the virus is hard to contract and spread between person-to-person has been shown to be extremely rare.
“This is not another COVID; the risk to the public is low,” said World Health Organization Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Gehbreyeesus, “so they shouldn’t be scared and they shouldn’t panic.”
The virus is already well-known and understood. Although the treatment process is complex and treacherous, often involving ventilators and life-support machines, many have made full recoveries. Though, the easiest steps towards staying Hantavirus free are washing your hands, having regular check-ups, and staying up to date with vaccinations.
Overall, there’s nothing to be afraid of. The Hantavirus has practically no chance of coming to California. Just remember to stay clean and healthy and you’ll be 100% Hantavirus free.
