Great things transpired when Mrs. Sossaman’s Civics class were given leadership positions and received the opportunity to create their own presidential campaigns. On Dec. 3, 2025, various groups of members from the student body were brought into the quad during their first, third and sixth periods to cast their ballot and decide which senior would win the presidential election!
The candidates ran for the American Independent, Liberation, Green, Republican, Democrat, and Peace & Freedom parties. Each candidate was tasked with creating a campaign to promote their party and putting up their own stands in the quad, where they would use their campaign to attract as many voters as possible. Voters would circle their candidate of choice on a slip of paper that they would put into a ballot box.
Each leader and their party had their own ideologies on how the country should be run, but they had to find a way to get their message out to as many people as possible. As students came into the quad to assess their possible leaders, each candidate employed different strategies to engage their voterbase. Among numerous strategies, handing out chips and candy as an incentive to vote was a popular method throughout many students’ campaigns.
Senior Nicholas Melendrez says, “I went about creating my presidential campaign by researching issues that are very contested and that the Green party wants to move towards like decentralization, social justice, equality and sustainability, which creates a better country for our constituents.”
When asked what he thought of the project as a presidential candidate, senior Edrys Sandoval said, “I feel like this project is actually very fun. I’m seeing a lot of new faces, and I’m talking to a lot of new people. For someone like me who’s really energetic and sociable, I think it’s very nice.”
This campaign project was definitely a learning experience for many, including both candidates and voters. Mrs. Sossaman’s Civics class was able to learn a lot about how to lead a group of people, and how to appeal to a large audience.
