The theater department is opening this fall season with the fantasy musical Into the Woods, written by James Lapine and featuring music by Stephen Sondheim.
Into the Woods will be performed Nov. 5–8 in the school’s theater.
Tickets cost $15–$17, with discounts available for those who purchase early.
Into the Woods is an immersive fantasy musical filled with wonderful songs. The story weaves together several fairy-tale plots: a baker and his wife who wish for a child, Cinderella who hopes to meet the prince, Jack who doesn’t want to sell his cow, and Little Red Riding Hood who wants to reach her grandmother’s house.
Writer James Lapine uses musical numbers to tell the story, including “Prologue: Into the Woods.” This challenging song tests the cast with its quick transitions and complex lyrics.
Playing the lead role of the Baker, Benny Crawford said, “I decided to join the play because this is my favorite show ever. The Baker, who I get to play, is my dream role. I’ve wanted to play him since the movie came out in 2014. I was only about 8 years old, and I remember watching it and thinking, ‘That looks so cool.’”
“I have never seen Into the Woods, so I wasn’t really familiar with musicals,” said Ari Guardado. “The more I looked into it and the more I played the role, the more I connected with the Witch. I don’t want to say I relate to her exactly, but I see parts of her in people I know. It’s really fun to play.”
By buying a ticket, students can experience this beloved musical while supporting the talents of Cerritos High’s drama students. Into the Woods runs Nov. 5–8, with shows starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15–$17.
