This year, Cerritos High School is joining the national flag football craze. Across the country, the sport has been growing in popularity and for the first time, Cerritos is taking part with its very own girls’ flag football team.
The new team has already created a buzz on campus, opening doors for students to try something new and empowering. “I’ve been playing flag football since middle school, and I was so excited to hear that Cerritos now has flag football,” said freshman Kaliyah Foster, No. 3.
Flag football offers all the excitement of traditional football, but with more inclusivity and a lot less risk. The sport is noncontact, meaning there’s no tackling. Instead, players wear flags attached to belts, and defenders must pull a flag from the ball carrier to stop the play. Teams compete to move the football down the field and score touchdowns, just like in regular football.
The sport’s rise in popularity has been huge. So much so that flag football will officially be included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. For Cerritos students, it’s more than just a new sport; it’s a successful petition campaign from last year brought to fruitions. Coach Brittney Parker-Goodin said, “I was not part of bringing it [flag football to CHS. I was hired as head coach and have been working since February to get it off the ground.” This happened just in time as the sport has been CIF Sanctions since 2023. We were one of only two schools that did not have a team in the 605 league.
Flag football is also a great way to stay active and meet new people. Because it’s noncontact, students of all skill levels and body types can participate and succeed. It’s also a great stepping stone for anyone who might want to move on to tackle football later.
