Cerritos High School’s annual Halloween Costume Contest took place this year, bringing out the creativity of teachers, students and staff alike. The contest was held during lunch break. Judges were faced with choosing winners across all categories, putting lots of thought and consideration into each decision. They chose from five categories: Best Individual Costume, Best Duo/Trio, Best Homemade Costume, Best Group Costume and Best Staff/Department Costume.
The winners were announced near the end of the lunch break. First, the Best Costume award went to Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw. The Best Duo/Trio was awarded to the SNL group, seemingly recreating sketch characters. The Best Homemade Costume went to the Mad Hatter, showcasing incredible craftsmanship, unique colors all around and an impressive green hat. Next was Cerritos’ song team, winning the Best Group category with their Barden Bellas from Pitch Perfect, which included a white shirt and blue skirt with a yellow bandanna around their necks. Finally, the Career and Technical Education Department won for Best Staff category. Their costume featured a twist, revealing itself when turned upside down. The teachers’ arms were covered in white and featured eyes on their hands; when raised, the ostriches came to life.
“I love Halloween. It’s such a fun holiday. I love seeing everyone dress up,” said junior and costume contest MC Anushka Zumale, who dressed as Indiana Jones.
Standout costumes included art teacher Celia Quiggle’s Aunt Gladys costume, which featured her students with the ring of a bell. Another impressive costume was Cerritos’ yell team with their Beanie Boo costume.
Ultimately, the contest was fun for everyone who participated, whether they won or not. Dressing up as our favorite characters and shows on Halloween allows us a chance to show our creativity and silliness. We hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween, and we look forward to next year’s contest!
