Cerritos High School celebrated its National Signing Day to honor exceptional student-athletes. On March 11, seniors Kara Codilla, Andrew Vet, and Chidubem Ozoagu committed to their respective colleges, received a Certificate of Recognition, and got signed for their athletic accomplishments. Surrounded by teammates, coaches, and families, they celebrated their opportunity and enjoyed a feast with the ones they love.
Senior Kara Codilla was signed by Manhattan University, all the way out in New York, for her talents in acrobatics and tumbling. Codilla has blended her longtime passion for gymnastics with her hopes of becoming a physician assistant. “I’m super excited to build connections and just find new experiences in a different state,” said Codilla. She would like to thank her parents for all the support and the coaches in Manhattan that reached out to her.
Swimmer Andrew Vet was signed by the University of San Diego for his work on the swimming team. Vet hopes to get into a career in Public Health and looks forward to living by the beach. “Always reach out,” said Vet to his fellow athletes, “coaches love it because it shows exactly how you’ll contribute to the team.” He would like to thank his family, friends, and coach.
Chidubem Ozoagu was signed by Valley City State University for his performances on the football team. Training for a career in firefighting, he hopes to get as much exposure in college as possible by going to camps and is excited to meet new people from all over the world. “Everything I’ve done came to this one moment– and it’s just a blessing to get this opportunity,” said Ozoagu. He would like to thank his family and Coach Demel Franklin for pushing him all these years.
Throughout their sophomore or junior year, notable student-athletes may be approached by a college coach. By signing the National Letter of Intent, they’re given athletic financial aid and guaranteed an athletics scholarship for at least one academic year.
Academically, being a student-athlete can offer a lot of financial support and educational aid. However, sports also strengthens bonds between players, teaching them social skills that can open doors for internships and jobs. By signing with these colleges, student-athletes guarantee their scholarships and show dedication to their sport.
Congratulations to these student-athletes of Cerritos High School for getting such an opportunity. We celebrate you for your years of hard work and wish you the best in college.
