If you’re looking for an exciting, intense, and heated sport to follow this winter, then look no further than the wrestling room. Here the ambitious, energetic, and driven wrestlers of the wrestling team will be preparing for important duels and tournaments in their upcoming season. Coach Robert Peramaki trains the boy’s team, while Coach Bryan Jernigan trains the girl’s team. You can contact Coach Peramaki at [email protected] and Coach Jernigan at [email protected].
In wrestling, your goal is to score as many points as possible or pin your opponent within the three periods of a match. The duration of matches can vary, depending on if the bout is for junior varsity or regular varsity. Junior varsity matches last for only three minutes, while regular varsity matches last for six minutes. Points are scored by taking your opponent down to the mat, which can be achieved by utilizing a variety of different takedowns. However you automatically win the match if you pin someone, which means putting both of an opponent’s shoulders flat on the mat for two seconds. If the match ends with equal points, then the match goes into overtime where the next point scored will win.
Wrestling is one of our school’s main winter sports, although it is quite niche. Soon, the boys season will startto ramp up with frequent two-day weekend competitions for both varsity and junior varsity. Varsity’s first tournament that you can go to is being held on Dec. 12 and 13 at Marina High School.
Unlike the boys, the girls team is not divided up based on their skill level. Instead they make up one huge team, making it easier to travel to all of their events. Don’t underestimate these girls though, as they are just as fierce and determined as our boy’s team. The girls season will start to pick up the pace with their own weekend tournaments, with these being the next events: Dec. 5 and 6 at Walnut, Dec. 13 at Redondo Union, Dec.19 at Edison, and Dec. 29 and 30 at Corona.
While tournaments are a major part of the wrestling season, the main events are the duel matches against other schools. In duels, you’ll be able to see the entirety of our wrestling team come together to face other teams. The first duel will be against John Glenn with the match being held on Jan. 8, 2026. Then, the wrestlers will face Artesia’s team on Jan. 15, 2026, where they’ll celebrate their long-awaited senior night. Finally, the match versus Pioneer, Downey, and Calvary Chapel will be the final duel of the season. If the season goes well, the team will even be able to qualify for the California Interscholastic Foundation (CIF) Team Duels and have a chance to become CIF champions.
